On 16th January 2025, from 09:00 to 12:00 CET, UPLIFT (Upcycling Bio Plastics of Food and Drinks Packaging) hosted its virtual final conference, Shaping Tomorrow’s Packaging Today. The event brought together insights and achievements from UPLIFT’s dedicated consortium of experts, highlighting significant technical advancements and results achieved over recent years in sustainable packaging solutions.
The conference delved into groundbreaking innovations within the plastics industry, addressing the entire plastic value chain from production to end-of-life processing. Key discussions included advancements in depolymerisation and cleaning processes, critical for converting plastic waste into reusable components, as well as fermentation techniques that transform basic materials into valuable compounds. Attendees explored the chemo-enzymatic synthesis of eco-friendly polyesters and reviewed the scalability of these innovative methods, showcasing their potential to revolutionise the industry.
UPLIFT’s ambition has been to advance the development and validation of novel enzymatic and microbial processes for the sustainable use of plastics in food and drinks packaging applications. These methods were rigorously tested and evaluated from technical, environmental, and socio-economic perspectives, contributing significantly to the evolution of a more circular European plastic packaging industry.
